Ag Nikolas Festival at Mavronas

The Agios Nikolaos Festival at Mavrona Bay in Ithaca is a cherished local celebration held annually on May 10th, honoring the passage of Saint Nicholas's relics through the Ionian Islands. Set against the serene backdrop of Mavrona Bay, just below the village of Rachi near Kioni, the festival begins with a morning church service at the historic chapel of Agios Nikolaos. This chapel, the sole surviving structure of a 17th-century monastery destroyed in the 1953 earthquakes, features ancient columns preserved in its sanctuary . St. Nicholas Chapel.

Following the service, the community gathers for a festive meal, traditionally featuring spit-roasted lamb and homemade pies and desserts. This event attracts both locals and visitors, fostering a sense of unity and offering a glimpse into Ithaca's rich cultural heritage. While recent regulations have altered traditional practices, such as outdoor grilling, the festival's spirit endures, with the community adapting to ensure the celebration continues to thrive.

If you're planning to visit Ithaca in May, attending the Agios Nikolaos Festival provides an authentic experience of the island's traditions and communal warmth.
